The President of the Senate said that legalizing gambling could be a long term way of raising revenue for the government. Speaking to BBC Brazil at the LIDE Brazil Conference held in London President of the Senate Родриго Пачеко said: “There are projects for legal frameworks under debate, such as the legalization of games and sports betting, which can be the path to sustainable revenue.”
A project that legalizes gambling has already been approved by the House in 2022 and is awaiting a vote in the Senate. 442 PL / 91, was passed in the lower house and is now in the senate under the name Law No. 2234/2022. The bill if approved would allow for an opening up of the market including integrated casinos, as well as casino riverboats, and bingo halls (with electronic bingo machines on site).
Pacheco told BBC News Brasil that the project that legalizes gambling will be put on the voting agenda sometime in the next two months – between May and June.
“We want to speed up the vote on all these projects that generate revenue and one of these projects is the one that legalizes gambling, which has already passed in the Chamber,” he said.
